When Hospitals Fail..

Tuesday Jul 4, 2006

I can not figure out our local hospitals here.. Frankly im appauled at the level of care they are able to provide.. It really makes me nervous to go into one to have this baby!

My son got metal in his eye over the weekend. So I call his peds office to see what I need to do.. If i can just bring him in on monday morning or what. They said to take him STRAIGHT to the er and have them remove the metal. So i do just that! Thankfully they were not too busy.. However they look in his eye and confirm yes there is metal in his eye.. But here is the bad news! They do not have the resources to remove the metal! No. A HOSPITAL can not remove the metal.. The EMERGENCY Room can NOT remove the metal.. I’ll have to take him to a opthamologist and have it done..

Okay so I spent 2 hours on the phone trying to find one open who can do this.. And am told they havent a dr who can do it because its a holiday. Take him to the er.. The ER said they co uldnt do it!!!! SEE THE PROBLEM??????

Oh but all agreed he needed it removed IMMEDIATELY! The one place that was open.. Wouldnt do it because they dont accept his insurance and they want cash for hte procedure up front.. I dont have 250$ up front cash!

My biggest issue.. Is how the hell can a hospital/emergency room handle a trauma situation is they cant remove a small piece of metal from someones eye?????????????????????? The procedure isnt that difficult.. Ive seen it done about 50 times as my husband is a welder.. It doesnt take a brain surgeon to remove the metal.. But it does take someone who knows what they are doing. An emergency room SHOULD be able to do that!!!!!!!!!! They SHOULD be able to remove the metal..

So until Wed when the opthamologist offices open back up.. My son has to keep metal in his eye..Which BTW is NOT agood thing because the eye heals quickly and it covers the metal.. making it harder to remove..We may be taking him to galveston tom morning and seeing if their hospital there can do it. Since our hospital ER s here cant seem to get doctors have their heads out of their asses to remove the metal.. Galveston is the level 1 trauma center for the entire area here.. They cover 9 counties.. if they cant do it.. IM MOVING TO SOMEWHERE THAT has the resources available to handle something more than a cold or the flu bug!

Its really ridiculous! How can these hospitals handle an emergency if they don thave the resources for something as little as this?????????????????????????????

Galveston? UTMB? Hmmmm…. That’s work.

Hope everything goes well and you get it out soon…. I’d hate to see him scratch something and damage it just because of an incompetent ER staff….

YIKES! That surely sounds like too long for him to be w/o having it removed. Did you try where your husband would go for an industrial accident? Sometimes those urgent cares will do it. I hope you’re able to find some place asap.
